Think of the ten most recent technologies you know of.

How did you feel?

The question of feeling may seem unusual, but people make their purchasing decisions based on feeling rather than logic (much to my eternal chagrin… and I’m the same as everyone else).

Were you excited? Did you inwardly groan because your teenager might want it? Were you largely apathetic? People are complex, and their reactions to new things are equally complex.

Why does one person use their computer as an entertainment device, while another uses it exclusively for work? Why do some people love their cell phones while others hate them? Why does one person use their machine as a tool to better their life while another uses it to feed their addiction?

– What is changing in society as a result of technology?

– For each change, consider

– Is it an amplification of a pre-existing problem?

– Is it a benefit?

– Is it a fundamental shift? An introduction of something completely new?

Think of the technologies that characterize your life. How do you use them? Do they benefit you? Do you have a love/hate relationship with any of them? Is there anything you wish you could completely get rid of?
